World Kalaripayattu Federation to Grant Recognition to Kalaripayattu Federations Across the World
International Expansion and Development Initiatives Ahead of the 2026 World Kalaripayattu Championship
With the objective of promoting the global growth and development of Kalaripayattu, India’s traditional martial art and a proud symbol of the country’s rich cultural heritage, the World Kalaripayattu Federation (WKF) is launching a series of extensive international initiatives.
One of the federation’s primary objectives is to bring together Kalaripayattu federations and organizations operating in different countries and continents and strengthen the process of granting them official affiliation and recognition. These initiatives will focus on promoting Kalaripayattu worldwide, standardizing training methods, harmonizing competition formats, encouraging international cooperation, and supporting the development of athletes and coaches.
Kalaripayattu is not merely a martial art. It is a comprehensive traditional discipline that brings together India’s history, culture, heritage, physical fitness, discipline, and self-control. The World Kalaripayattu Federation believes that it is essential to take this valuable heritage to younger generations across the world and secure greater recognition and acceptance for Kalaripayattu in the international sporting arena.

Building an International Kalaripayattu Network
As part of this initiative, special attention will be given to bringing Kalaripayattu organizations from different countries under a common international umbrella and establishing strong organizational structures in individual nations.
Organizations receiving affiliation will be provided opportunities to participate in international competitions and cooperate in coach and athlete exchange programmes, technical training camps, seminars, and national and international championships.
The international affiliation activities are being intensified as part of the preparations for the 2026 World Kalaripayattu Championship, which the federation aims to organize. Through this championship, the federation intends to bring together teams and athletes from different countries on a common platform and showcase the international strength, heritage, and potential of Kalaripayattu.
Long-Term Development Plans Through 2036
Alongside these initiatives, the federation has also formulated long-term development plans extending up to 2036. The major objectives include establishing recognized national federations across different continents, developing an international competition calendar, introducing uniform competition and training standards, attracting younger generations to Kalaripayattu, increasing women’s participation, enhancing the professional capabilities of coaches, and strengthening the international representation of the martial art.
A well-structured organizational system and transparent administration are essential to achieving wider global recognition and developing Kalaripayattu into a stronger presence on international sporting platforms. Therefore, the process of granting membership and affiliation will be carried out based on clearly defined criteria, organizational constitutions, and relevant operational documents.
These initiatives by the World Kalaripayattu Federation are expected to mark a significant milestone in the future development of Kalaripayattu. The federation’s long-term mission is to promote this great martial art, which originated in India, across different countries through strong organizational networks and international sporting platforms.
The announcement was made by Dr. V. V. Christo Gurukkal, General Secretary of the World Kalaripayattu Federation.
