WWE is on the verge of shattering a big milestone that has stood for 39 years. However, it will be matched at the next Money In The Bank PLE on July 1. The original record, which has a connection to Dwayne Johnson, will be smashed at the O2 Arena in London by his Anoa’i family.
Fireworks are certain as The Usos battle Roman Reigns and Solo Sikoa at the PLE, but history will be made when ‘The Bloodline Civil War’ takes place in London.
As previously stated, the record was set 39 years ago. On January 21, 1984, members of the illustrious Anoa’i wrestling dynasty competed in a contest. That was the last time the Anoa’i family had camp members on both sides.
The aforementioned bout was an eight-man tag team match with a best two out of three falls criteria. Rocky Johnson, DJ’s father, joined up with Jimmy Snuka, Tony Atlas, and Andre the Giant to take on Sgt. Slaughter and The Wild Samoans (Afa, Samula, and Sika). In a near 10-minute match, Andre and his team won two falls to one.
Sika’s son, Roman Reigns, will face his twin cousins Jimmy and Jey Uso by teaming up with Solo Sikoa over four decades later. It will be the first time in the new millennium that family members would compete in the WWE.
Aside from that, it’ll be an all-Anoa’i affair as Reigns goes on a mission to reclaim his position as The Tribal Chief of The Bloodline.
Meanwhile, Rocky Johnson was involved in another record that came at the cost of The Wild Samoans months before the unprecedented eight-man tag bout.
Like father, like son
Dwayne Johnson may be one of the most recognizable faces in pro wrestling, and undoubtedly the biggest name to emerge from the Samoan wrestling family, but Rocky Johnson wowed the crowd before him.
Rocky Johnson, a WWE Hall of Famer, was the promotion’s second-generation performer. His tenure, however, was brief, lasting just from 1982 to 1985. But, in that time, he and Tony Atlas were the first black men to win the Tag Team Championship. On November 15, 1983, the two African American wrestlers defeated Afa and Sika to win the crown. On December 10, the program aired.
Decades later, the WWE promised a WrestleMania 39 match between their kids, Roman Reigns and The Rock. But that didn’t happen since Johnson later backed out.
